Safe Storage Guidelines for Aerosol Cans in the Workplace
April 18, 2026

Proper storage of aerosol cans is essential to ensure workplace safety and maintain product integrity. Due to their pressurized nature, aerosol containers must be handled and stored with care to minimize risks such as leakage, fire, or explosion. Below are key recommendations for safe storage:

1. Avoid Heat and Sources of Ignition

Aerosol cans should never be exposed to direct heat, open flames, or high-temperature environments. Elevated temperatures can increase internal pressure, potentially causing the container to rupture or explode.

Always store aerosol products in a cool, dry area, away from radiators, machinery, or any heat-generating equipment. Maintaining stable ambient conditions is critical to preventing pressure build-up and ensuring safe storage.

2. Store in Cool, Dry, and Well-Ventilated Areas

High temperatures and poor ventilation can lead to the accumulation of flammable gases in case of leakage. To reduce this risk, aerosol cans should be stored in well-ventilated environments where any released gases can disperse safely.

Whenever possible, outdoor storage in designated, compliant storage units or cages is recommended. Natural ventilation significantly lowers the risk of gas accumulation, thereby reducing the likelihood of fire or explosion.

3. Use Compliant and Certified Aerosol Containers

Ensure that all aerosol cans used and stored meet relevant safety and regulatory standards. Properly manufactured and certified cans are designed to withstand internal pressure and environmental conditions.

In addition, appropriate engineering controls—such as secure storage cages and segregation from incompatible materials—should be implemented to prevent accidental ignition, gas release, or projectile hazards.

4. Protect from Direct Sunlight

Direct exposure to sunlight can rapidly increase the temperature of aerosol cans, raising internal pressure and associated risks.

Store aerosol products in shaded areas, away from direct sunlight, ignition sources, and other hazardous materials. Position storage facilities strategically to minimize environmental exposure.

5. Inspect and Handle with Care

Regularly inspect aerosol cans for signs of damage, including dents, corrosion, or leakage. Damaged containers should be handled with caution and disposed of in accordance with local regulations.

Avoid subjecting aerosol cans to physical impact or conditions that may compromise their structural integrity. Safe handling practices are just as important as proper storage.
